Named for their city of origin, Brussels in Belguim, the Brussels Griffon  may refer to three different breeds, the Griffon Bruxellois, the Griffon Belge and the Petit Brabançon.

This dog breed has an almost human-like expression. The Brussels Griffon makes an awesome and cheerful companion dog. The dog is good with other pets, including cats and smaller animals, but does best with older, considerate children. This dog breed is both sensitive and curious, but demanding. It exudes love and is extremely affectionate towards its owners. This dog breed loves to bark, making them good alarm dogs. The breed is intelligent  and should be trained from an early age.

Cheerful and friendly, but sometimes moody, the Brussels Griffon breed can be a little finicky. As with many smaller breeds, the Brussels Griffon can be a challenge to housebreak, but with persistence and consistency, they do learn. The breed tends to be willful and highly-strung  so gentle, but firm handling works best.

The coat of this dog breed requires a fair amount of maintenance. Daily brushing to keep the coat shiny and clean, and prevent any matting and tangling is necessary. The beard around the mouth area should be cleaned regularly to prevent caking. The Brussels Griffon sheds little hair.

There are two coat varieties for the breed: rough and smooth. The hair of the rough-coated is harsh, dense and wiry. The smooth-coated Brussels Griffon is the quite the opposite – glossy, straight and short.

This dog breed tends to lose interest fairly quickly and requires consistency and variation in training, and a bit of fun will go a long way. Obedience classes are recommended, but not essential.

This dog breed is essentially a cross between the Bulldog and the Old English Terrier, but there is a bit of Spanish Pointer in the bloodline. The Bull Terrier breed originated in 1830 and was bred to attack bulls in combat sports. By 1850 they had been replaced by the White Cavalier and have since been used for a variety of purposes, including guard dogs, ratters, herders and watchdogs. The Bull Terrier excels at all these disciplines.

This is a lively dog breed that tends to be lazy and quiet at times. The Bull Terrier is extremely muscular, powerful and sturdy. This breed has a very sweet nature and is very affectionate. This is a very polite and naturally obedient breed that thrives on human attention.

This is a very lively dog breed. The Bull Terrier requires a fair amount of exercise to stay healthy and active. They have an enormous amount of energy and, at a minimum a medium sized yard is best. Descended from the Asiatic mastiff, the Bulldog was developed in Great Britain. This breed was bred to participate in the blood sport of bull baiting. The dog was also used as a competitor against bears, other vicious carnivores and lions. After the enactment of anti-baiting laws in the 19th century, purebred breed became very rare. Today, the breed is a family companion and show dog.

This dog breed does not require an excessive amount of maintenance. The dog needs occasional brushing with a firm bristle-brush. To preserve the natural oils of the coat, the dog should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. This breed has a tendency to slobber and drool so daily cleaning of the face is a must. The breed is susceptible to breathing problems, low tolerance to anesthesia, poor eyesight, skin infections, and hip and knee problems. Nearly all breed are born by Caesarean section because of their large heads. The Bulldog does not do well in extreme weather, both hot and cold, and is highly prone to heat stroke.

Early socialization and obedience is essential for the Bulldog. This breed tends to be hard-headed and stubborn. It is important that the breed understands who the boss is.
