Bulldog Overview

Descended from the Asiatic mastiff, the Bulldog was developed in Great Britain. This breed was bred to participate in the blood sport of bull baiting. The dog was also used as a competitor against bears, other vicious carnivores and lions. After the enactment of anti-baiting laws in the 19th century, purebred breed became very rare. Today, the breed is a family companion and show dog.

Bulldog Characteristics

This dog breed is moderate in size, heavy, and built low to the ground. Bulldogs are strong, kind, amiable and brave dogs. This breed is not vicious or aggressive, but is somewhat dignified. The Bulldog has a passive nature and a delightful sense of humor.

Bulldog Temperament

This dog breed is devoted, exceptionally affectionate and extremely loyal. The dog is also dependable, gentle and exceptionally good with children. This breed gets along well with other pets, especially those they were raised with, but has a tendency to bully unfamiliar dogs. The Bulldog thrives on human attention. This breed makes an excellent guard dog, but is not an excessive barker. They are very possessive of their food and should never be fed in the presence of children or pets.

Bulldog Care

This dog breed does not require an excessive amount of maintenance. The dog needs occasional brushing with a firm bristle-brush. To preserve the natural oils of the coat, the dog should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. This breed has a tendency to slobber and drool so daily cleaning of the face is a must. The breed is susceptible to breathing problems, low tolerance to anesthesia, poor eyesight, skin infections, and hip and knee problems. Nearly all breed are born by Caesarean section because of their large heads. The Bulldog does not do well in extreme weather, both hot and cold, and is highly prone to heat stroke.

Bulldog Coat

The coat of the Bulldog is straight, short and glossy. The hair of this breed is fine to the touch. The Bulldog’s coat comes in a variety of colors, including red brindle, solid white, solid red, fawn, fallow, piebald, and various shades of brindle. This breed is an average shedder.

Bulldog Training

Early socialization and obedience is essential for the Bulldog. This breed tends to be hard-headed and stubborn. It is important that the breed understands who the boss is. This breed does not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed techniques and training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, consistency, praise and reward.

Bulldog Activity

To stay fit, the Bulldog needs regular exercise. A securely leashed walk is normally sufficient and they love family play sessions. The breed is well suited to apartment and city living. They are not very active indoors and do not require a yard.
