Belgian Tervuren Overview


This dog breed originated in Belgium the late 19th century. As a herding dog, the Belgian Tervuren was bred for their temperament, trainability and intelligence. With the increase in popularity of dog shows, breeders produced a breed that retained the original traits, but was additionally both beautiful and graceful. Although still relatively rare, the Belgian Tervuren breed is well established in the United States.

Belgian Tervuren Characteristics


Elegant and beautiful in appearance, the Belgian Tervuren is well-balanced and of medium size. This dog breed is agile, alert, beefy and has an inquisitive nature. The Belgian Tervuren is elegant and lively in movement, and has the ability to work in rough weather or rough terrain. There are very few breeds more handsome in appearance than the Belgian Tervuren.


 


Belgian Tervuren Temperament


This dog breed is exceedingly loyal and devoted. The Belgian Tervuren thrives on human interaction and loves being a part of the family. This dog breed craves attention for if ignored they tend to become destructive. The Belgian Tervuren has deep-seated protective and territorial instincts, and is watchful, serious and smart. They may also be sensitive and shy. Belgian Tervurens are good with older, considerate children. Caution and care should be taken when introducing this breed to non-canine pets. The Belgian Tervuren may attempt to dominate other dogs. The generally forms a close attachment with a single family member. The Belgian Tervuren is a very impressive breed that requires an experienced owner.

Belgian Tervuren Care


This dog breed needs daily brushing and combing to prevent tangles and matting. The Belgian Tervuren should not be bathed more than once a month, using a mild shampoo. Belgian Tervurens are prone to epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.


 


Belgian Tervuren Coat


This dog breed has a double coat that allows them to adapt to extreme climates and temperatures. The outer coat of the Belgian Tervuren comprises of long guard hair that is plentiful and straight. This hair is of medium harshness. The under coat is soft and dense. The hair is abundant around the neck, tail, and backs of legs. The Belgian Tervuren’s coat is generally a base color ranging fawn to mahogany, while the guard hairs are tipped in black. This dog breed becomes darker in color as it gets older. They are constant, light shedders. The females sheds heavily twice a year, while the male sheds heavily once a year.

Belgian Tervuren Training


This dog breed requires extensive and intensive socialization from an early age. The Belgian Tervuren has an inordinate amount of energy and thrives on having a job to do. They excel in working and competitive obedience, as well as police and guard work. The Belgian Tervuren does not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed training techniques. They must be trained with firmness, fairness, respect and consistency.


 


Belgian Tervuren Activity


This dog breed thrives on vigorous activity. The Belgian Tervuren loves human interaction especially play sessions with their family. This dog breed is not well suited to a sedentary owner or apartment dwelling. Belgian Tervurens prefer a setting with room to roam, or a home with a large securely fenced yard. They make terrific jogging and hiking companions and are enthusiastic and trustworthy workers.
