Clumber Spaniel Overview


This dog breed was developed in England in the middle of the 14th century and is the heaviest of the Spaniels. The Clumber Spaniel was favored by British monarchs for their serious and majestic demeanor. This dog breed is a keen hunter and excels at retrieving pheasant and partridge. The breed is a wonderful water dog, with a heightened sense of smell, and remarkable endurance and stamina.

Clumber Spaniel Care


This dog breed requires a fair amount of maintenance. The Clumber Spaniel should be groomed daily with a comb and brush. Professional trimming of the coat is also required. Their eyes and ears should to be cleaned on a consistent basis. The Clumber Spaniel breed is prone to hip dysplasia, juvenile lameness, dry eyes, cataracts and flea and skin allergies. This breed tends to gain weight easily and should never be overfed. The dog has a thick coat and tends to over-heat easily.


 


Clumber Spaniel Coat


The body coat of the Clumber Spaniel is straight, flat, thick and weather resistant. It is soft to the touch. The ears, legs and stomach are slightly feathered with straight hair and there is a thick ruff of hair at the neck. The Clumber Spaniel is a double coat breed. The outer coat consists of long guard hairs, while the undercoat is thick and soft. The coat color is predominantly white with either orange or lemon markings. This breed is a heavy shedder.

Clumber Spaniel Training


This dog breed loves to please and has a superb memory. The Clumber Spaniel is typically relatively easy to train. This dog breed is quiet and unassuming and does not respond well to harsh or forceful training techniques. The Clumber Spaniel does best with a calm handler who provides positive reinforcement, praise, love, fairness and consistency. Early socialization and obedience training is advised.

Clumber Spaniel Activity


This dog breed adapts well to apartment or city living, provided their exercise needs are met. The Clumber Spaniel requires daily exercise and loves a brisk walk, chasing a ball and swimming. If this breed is not sufficiently exercised, they become overweight, which shortens their life span.
