Dandie Dinmont Terrier Characteristics
This dog breed is a long, low-stationed working terrier with a curved top line. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier has distinctive head with a silken topknot that is large but in proportion to the size of the dog. The dark eyes are large and round with a soft and wise expression. This dog breed is sturdily built with strong bone structure and ample muscular strength. As with most terrier breeds, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is extremely independent. This dog breed does tend to be very shy of strangers and new environments, but with the proper socialization this is easily overcome. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a lively, active and beautiful little terrier. Dandie Dinmont puppies are generally far darker than adults and their color lightens as they grow.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier Temperament
This dog breed is affectionate and fun loving. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is lively, plucky, determined, willful, independent and very intelligent. These are bold, yet dignified terriers. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier generally gets along well with well-behaved children, especially those they were raised with. This breed does have dominance tendencies, but the level varies greatly from dog to dog. Some male dogs can be aggressive with other male dogs in the household, while female is sometimes snappy and bad tempered. It is recommended that this breed not be homed with non-canine pets, unless raised with them.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier Care
This dog breed requires a fair amount of maintenance. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier should be brushed regularly to prevent matting and tangling. Plucking and bathing may also be necessary. The coat can be professionally clipped, if preferred. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier sheds little to no hair.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier Coat
The sturdy, flexible body and scimitar shaped tail of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier are covered with a rather crisp double coat that is either mustard or pepper in color. Pepper ranges from dark bluish black to a light silvery gray, the topknot is a silvery white. Mustard can range from a reddish brown to a pale fawn, with the topknot a creamy white.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier Training
This dog breed requires a firm, but gentle, handler. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier can be stubborn at times, but their intelligence makes training relatively simple.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier Activity
This dog breed is ideal for city or apartment living, provided that their exercise needs are met. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier does not require much exercise and indoor activities are normally sufficient for this small, yet sturdy breed.
