Doberman Pinscher Overview
Originating in Germany in the 1860s, the Doberman Pinscher developed by Louis Doberman was and used as a personal guard and watch dog, vermin eradicator, sheep herder and gun-dog. This noble and proud breed served heroically during both World Wars and is the official combat dog of the United States Marine Corps.

This dog breed is medium to large in size, muscular, powerful, graceful and elegant. The Doberman Pinscher is courageous, resourceful, bold and highly intelligent. They are one of the most revered and popular dog breeds; known for their deep devotion and protective nature.
Doberman Pinscher Temperament
Versatile, courageous, and assertive, the Doberman Pinscher thrives on human company and stimulation. This dog breed is extremely loyal and defensive of their family and home. The Doberman Pinscher is best suited to a home with older children. This breed does not typically get along well with other household pets. They are aloof and aloof with strangers and make outstanding guard dogs. This people-oriented breed may bond closely with one particular family member. The breed requires continuous attention and does not do well if left alone for extended periods of time. They are not recommended for the novice, inexperienced or sedentary dog owner.
Doberman Pinscher Care
This dog breed requires minimal grooming. Occasional brushing or wiping of the coat with a damp cloth to minimize loose hair normally suffices for the Doberman Pinscher. Dental hygiene is crucial to prevent early tooth loss. It is also important to keep the nails shortly trimmed. To preserve the natural oils of the skin and coat, the Doberman Pinscher should only be bathed when absolutely necessary and a dry shampoo should be sufficient. The breed is susceptible to Wobbler Syndrome, Von Willebrands Disease, bloat, hip dysplasia and congenital heart disorders. This dog breed does not do well in cold climates.
Doberman Pinscher Coat
The coat of the Doberman Pinscher is thick, smooth, short, hard and close fitting. The color of the coat comes in fawn, red, blue, black and tan and black. There are typically has rust colored markings above the eyes, on the muzzle, throat, legs, feet, chest, and below the tail. The Doberman Pinscher breed is an average shedder.
Doberman Pinscher Training
This dog breed is relatively easy to train, but requires a fairly dominant owner. Early socialization and obedience are vital to prevent shyness, timidity and aggression. The Doberman Pinscher does not respond well to forceful or harsh training techniques. This breed does best with positive reinforcement, firmness, fairness, consistency and respect. The Doberman Pinscher excels at competitive obedience, schutzhund, tracking, search and rescue and police work. This breed also makes a wonderful therapy dog.
Doberman Pinscher Activity
This dog breed is extremely energetic and active. The Doberman Pinschers require extensive exercise and mental stimulation on a daily basis. This dog breed loves family play sessions and makes a superb walking and jogging companion. The Doberman Pinscher adapts well to apartment or city living, provided they are sufficiently exercised. A securely fenced yard where there is room to romp and run is preferable.
