These dogs are lovingly referred to as the “monkey dog” because of their physical appearance and absolutely delightful attitude.


They have strong characters.


Their sporting instinct made this breed especially useful in the past  for catching rats and mice.


Today, Affenpinscher’s are primarily amiable companions and make wonderful pets. This dog breed originated in Germany in the 16th century.

This is a balanced and sturdy breed.


They are bold and brave, yet charming and spunky.


These dogs have amazing dexterity and agility. They are smarter than most breeds and thought to possess thinking and reasoning capabilities.


Affenpinscher’s additionally  display sensitivity and gentleness.


The Affenpinscher is often considered the “class clown” and will keep you entertained for hours.


Affenpinscher Temperament

They relate well to other pets; especially those they were raised with.


This breed is not ideal for young children as they have a tendency to guard and protect their food and toys. They can become aggressive and bold toward anything or anyone they perceive as a threat.


They love to entertain and expect to be entertained. These dogs thoroughly loves being part of the family.

These dogs require minimal grooming.


Their tough coat should never be clipped short as this could ruin it for many years.


Brushing and combing weekly are essential, and plucking should be done when necessary.


Occasionally, stray hairs grow in the corner of the eyes and should be removed immediately as they cause irritation.


This breed is prone to slipped stifle, open fontanel and respiratory problems.


Affenpinscher Coat

The Affenpinscher has a coat of thick shaggy hair, which is harsh and rough, and approximately 1inch in length on the shoulders and body. The head, neck, chest, stomach and legs have a longer and less harsh coat.


When fully grown, the Affenpinscher has a mane of hair at the neck area, longer hair on the head and eyebrows, and a beard.


Their coat serves to protect them in extreme weather conditions. They are low shedding. The coat comes in a range of colors such as, black, gray, silver, and red.


Affenpinscher Training

This breed be tricky to house-train. The crate training technique is recommended.


They present an authoritarian attitude and require firmness and consistency.


The Affenpinscher is quick to learn, but does not respond to repetition. They are happiest with a variety of tasks as this prevents boredom.


Affenpinscher Activity

Their exercise requirements can be met with indoor play sessions on a consistent basis.


They do well as apartment or condominium dwellers, provided they are taken for daily, leashed walks.


They also enjoy a chance to run, so a small fenced yard is ideal. These dogs tends to climb and bark so supervision is necessary outdoors.
