This unique dog breed is suitable for allergy suffers. Developed in the 1970s by Edwin Scott, the American Hairless Terrier descended by chance from the purebred, coated Rat Terrier. The American Hairless Terrier is popular in the United States and other nations as like England, Finland, and Canada. American Hairless Terriers are the first hairless breed to have originated in the United States.

American Hairless Terrier Characteristics

This dog breed is small to medium in size. They are agile, lively, and well muscled. They are elegant and compact dogs who exhibit an assured demeanor and have an inquisitive nature.

American Hairless Terrier Temperament

Affectionate, playful, and loving dogs, the American Hairless Terrier also tends to be fearless and feisty. This breed does better with older, considerate children that they have been raised with than small children. The dog breed also gets along well with other canines, cats and various other pets. They are mostly a very social and pleasant breed and relate well to strangers. They make good watchdogs as they bark at atypical sounds.

American Hairless Terrier Care

The skin of the American Hairless Terrier should be shielded from both heat and cold. In summer, this dog requires sunscreen, and in winter a sweater is required. Regular baths are beneficial and a mild shampoo should be used. To prevent dryness, skin lotion should be applied as the dog is prone to skin rashes. The nails on the feet also require regular trimming.

American Hairless Terrier Coat

The American Hairless Terrier comes in two completely different varieties: hairless and coated. Within the hairless variety puppies are born with a tremendous, delicate “down” that diminishes by the age of eight weeks, leaving the pet hairless. In the coated variety has a dense, soft and sleek coat.

American Hairless Terrier Training

This dog breed is relatively easy to train. The American Hairless Terrier will benefit from early socialization and obedience training is recommended. These dogs do not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed methods and training should be executed with firmness, fairness, persistence, and consistency.
