The exact origin of this dog breed is unknown. It is generally believed that the American Eskimo Dog was first introduced into the United States by German immigrants in the twentieth century. The American Eskimo Dog a member of the Spitz family. This dog breed comes in three different varieties: toy, miniature and standard.

This breed loves company and when left alone or isolated for prolonged periods of time they tend to become destructive.

The American Eskimo Dog breed needs to be brushed at least twice a week to prevent tangling and matting. When shedding, a daily brush is required. The pores of the skin are drier pores than most breeds, so they should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. The American Eskimo Dog is prone to hip dysplasia, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.

The American Eskimo Dog has beautiful double coat. The undercoat is thick with a longer coat of guard hair that grows through to form the outer coat, which is straight with no wave or curl. There is a pronounced ruff around the neck. The backs of the front and rear legs are properly feathered. The American Eskimo Dog’s coat is normally white, or white with cream or biscuit markings. This dog breed is an average shedder and sheds twice a year.

The American Eskimo Dog is simple to train and loves to please. This dog breed is extremely proficient in obedience trials. It’s crucial that they receive early socialization to prevent aggression at a later stage. This breed is gifted at guarding, performing tricks, competitive obedience, agility and narcotics detection.

The American Eskimo Dog  requires daily exercise. They enjoy leashed walks or playing in an enclosed yard. They are energetic indoors, active  by nature and love play sessions.
