A rare breed that was practically extinct after WWII. The American Bulldog breed was saved by the efforts of a single man, John D. Johnson. Originally used for the blood sports, this dog breed became prized by farmers for their intelligence, working skills, stamina and protective nature. The American Bulldog has also been used to hunt wild boar, bear, raccoon and squirrel. They make great family pets and bond strongly with their owners.

This dog breed has extraordinary athletic ability. The American Bulldog is a muscular, robust and agile dog, with very powerful jaws and large heads. They are extremely swift and able to leap heights of six feet or more. The American Bulldog has a brave, alert, courageous and fearlessly determined nature.

Typically, this dog breed is confident, social, friendly, calm and devoted. They bond strongly with their owners. The American Bulldog gets along will with children, but because of their strength and power the breed is best-suited to older, considerate children. They relate well to dogs they were raised with, but can be aggressive towards smaller family pets and cats. The American Bulldog is a devoted and constant companion that has strong guarding instincts. The breed is reserved and wary of strangers and tends to be aggressive towards dogs they do not know. The breed is not recommended for first-time owners or novice handlers.

This dog breed should only be bathed when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. The American Bulldog is a relatively healthy breed, but is prone to hip dysplasia.

Early intense socialization and obedience training are vital for the American Bulldog.  They do not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed methods and should be trained with firmness, fairness, persistence, and consistency. The American Bulldog’s talents include tracking, obedience, working and guarding.

The American Bulldog is happiest when they have a job to do. This breed loves frequent, leashed walks, play sessions and romping in the yard. They like to roam and are well-suited to farm life, but a large fenced yard will suffice. The American Bulldog adapts well to apartment dwelling, provided they are given ample exercise, attention, and stimulation.
