This dog breed is naturally sweet and well-behaved. The Basset Hound makes a wonderful family pet. The breed has a very gentle and loving nature. This breed is prone to howling and barking. The Basset will sound the alarm, but is far too mild to be a guard dog.

Basset Hound Characteristics

The long ears of the dog are this breed’s most distinguishing feature. The breed is moderately lazy and gets along better with older, considerate children. This breed has a tendency to be stubborn, but is never timid. Basset Hounds are naturally enjoyable, loving and mild dogs who are generally non-aggressive.

Basset Hound Temperament

Affectionate, lazy, devoted, quiet and peaceful, the breed does exceptionally well with a family. This breed loves children and usually gets along well with other animals. The Basset has the ability to learn tricks, but patience is required to overcome their stubborn tendencies.

Basset Hound Care

This dog breed sheds constantly. Combing and brushing the Basset Hound with a firm bristle brush will keep shedding to a minimum. The toenails should be trimmed regularly as this breed is lazy tends to neglect them. The ears also require regular cleaning.

The coat of the Basset Hound is straight, short, dense, hard, smooth and weather-resistant. The hair of this breed’s coat is firm in texture.

Basset Hound Training

This dog breed has a delicate nature and training requires gentleness and patience. Because of the Basset hound’s stubborn tendencies, consistency is a must. The dog has the tendency to wander off sniffing and completely disregard their handler, but fun techniques can overcome this.

Basset Hound Activity

This breed tends to overeat and should be given enough exercise to keep them trim. They adapt well to most environments, but are happiest with a garden to roam in. A daily walk will satisfy their exercise needs.
