American Pit Bull Terrier Overview
Originating in the 19th century, the American Pit Bull Terrier is famous for combining the gameness of a terrier and the athletic prowess and power of a bulldog. This dog breed’s many talents made them a favorite with farmers and ranchers for uses such as protection, livestock driving and hunting. The American Pit Bull Terrier also makes a wonderful family pet.

This terrier dog breed is solidly constructed, medium in size, muscular, and powerful. The American Pit Bull Terrier is often referred to as a warrior as they exhibit strength, courage, agility and grace. These dogs are exceptionally loyal and devoted to those they love.
American Pit Bull Terrier Temperament
This dog breed is extraordinarily loyal, deeply devoted, affectionate, intelligent and good-natured. The American Pit Bull Terrier does best in a home with older, considerate children. They also get along with dogs they have been raised wit, but do tend to be aggressive toward strange canines and small household pets. The American Pit Bull Terrier is exceedingly protective of their family, dwelling and territory. Because of their friendly nature, the American Pit Bull Terrier is not normally used as a guard dog. Contrary to popular belief, aggressive conduct towards humans is an uncharacteristic trait in this dog breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier does require an experienced handler and is not recommended for the novice.
American Pit Bull Terrier Care
Regular grooming with a firm bristle brush to remove dead hair is recommended for this dog breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. This breed is susceptible to hereditary cataracts, hip dysplasia, coronary heart disease and prone to grass allergies. The American Pit Bull Terrier prefers a warmer climate.

The coat of the American Pit Bull Terrier is shiny, short, smooth and stiff to the touch. The coat comes in a wide range of colors, mixture of color and color patterns. This dog breed is an above average shedder.
American Pit Bull Terrier Training
This dog breed is eager to please and does well at obedience training. The American Pit Bull Terrier requires early and intensive and socialization and obedience training should begin as a puppy. These terriers do not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training should be performed with respect, fairness and consistency. The American Pit Bull Terrier has the ability to excel at agility, weight–pulling and obedience.
American Pit Bull Terrier Activity
To keep the American Pit Bull Terrier happy, a lot of exercise is needed. This dog breed takes pleasure in securely leashed walks, mountain climbing and mountain-biking. The American Pit Bull Terrier thrives on human interaction and loves family play. They adapt relatively well to apartment living provided they are given sufficient exercise and stimulation.
