Belgian Shepherd Malinois Overview
This dog breed originated in Belgium and was developed for guarding and herding sheep. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is one of four breeds of Belgian Shepherds. Although popular in their native country as police dogs, they are rare in the United States.
Belgian Shepherd Malinois Characteristics
A medium to large sized breed, the Belgian Shepherd Malinois is squarely-built, muscular and elegant in appearance. They are an agile, alert, powerful and impressive breed of dog.
Belgian Shepherd Malinois Temperament
This dog breed not recommended for inexperienced or first time owners. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is devoted, protective, and attentive and typically bonds closely with a single family member. They are wary and suspicious of strangers and will guard and protect their family, property and territory. They get along well with children they were raised with, but not with unfamiliar children. It is important that the Belgian Shepherd Malinois is never engaged in chasing play, tug-of-war or rough play. This breed gets along well with other dogs, especially those they were raised with, but are not recommended for homes with non-canine pets. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is a “no-nonsense” breed that should be taken seriously.
Belgian Shepherd Malinois Care
This dog breed requires regular brushing with a firm bristle-brush. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois should only be bathed when absolutely necessary to preserve the natural oils of the coat. Belgian Shepherd Malinois‘ are prone to cancer, thyroid problems, hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA, epilepsy and anesthesia sensitivity.
Belgian Shepherd Malinois Coat
This is a double coat dog breed. The outer coat of the Belgian Shepherd Malinois is weather-resistant, straight, short and hard. The under coat is dense. The hair around the neck, tail and back of the thighs is a bit longer.
Belgian Shepherd Malinois Training
This dog breed is very intelligent and obedient. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois tends to be somewhat demanding and dominant. Early, intense, and ongoing socialization and obedience training is essential. This breed will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, tolerance, consistency and reward.
Belgian Shepherd Malinois Activity
This dog breed requires an inordinate amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is not suitable for city or apartment dwelling. This breed does best in a rural setting where there is a job to do and ample room to roam and run. They do extremely well in Schutzhund, bomb and narcotics detection, tracking, and herding.
